We understand that auditions are stressful. Here are some tips to ease the process;

  • Remember that you are a growing musician. We want to hear potential!
  • Remember that you have time to practice. Use this time wisely.
  • These are NOT live auditions. Take your time when recording your performance. If you are not happy with it, then do it again. However! We suggest NOT recording yourself more than 5 times as it can often be very difficult to select your best performance with too many options.
  • Remember that you are a great musician. You wouldn’t be auditioning for this group if you weren’t. Show us the best music YOU can create. Add your own phrasing, style, confidence and individuality to your performance.
  • Ask your musical friends, teachers, and mentors for help. If you don’t understand the material, need fingering help, or have a question about an excerpt- ask! We are all learning together so don’t be afraid to ask for help.

THE BIGGEST HINT WE CAN GIVE YOU is that we are not listening for perfection. We are listening for potential. So, when you are practicing in your room and just can’t get that one note. Don’t worry about it. Keep going. Don’t stop to go back and fix it. Definitely make a note to look at it later but the best thing you can do in your audition video is to keep going. It is important that you push through your mistakes. We believe it is better to have a musical, phrased and in tune performance, than a perfect one.

Tempos- This year we are allowing the students to pick an accessible tempo for them. Take it slow or take it quick but please, make it accurate! 😉

Percussionists– Please note that if you are unable to access a timpani, or any other specific instruments you need, all we ask is that you do your best. You may need to omit certain parts of the audition material because of a lack of instruments; and that is okay. Please let us know what parts you can’t accomplish however, we understand that some things may not be accessible right now and we don’t want that to stop you from auditioning!

Is your instrument locked away at school? We have extended the audition time till May 30th however, you may be worried about not getting your instrument in time. Don’t fret! Do you have a piano? Play your excerpt on the piano and submit it OR do you sing? Sing through your part and submit that! OR take your audition material and record yourself clapping though the excerpts! If none of these options are accessible for you send in your application form anyways! We won’t turn anyone away because they can’t get to an instrument. We do have the ability to accept students on recommendation only. We will make it work!
